Sharing the Love: Resumes

Resumes aren’t templates – they’re storytelling tools.

Many individuals think there are standards you have to follow or that there is only one way to write a resume. The truth is that there are numerous ways to use resumes to create a compelling narrative about yourself; there is no one size fits all approach to resume writing.

Give your plot some thought before you start listing all of your experiences. What are your aspirations for your career? Regarding what do you have a strong passion? What qualities or passions do you have that could set you apart? In what way would you like prospective employers to perceive you?

Here are some of our resume recommendations along with The Real Deal: snippets from real resumes that Creative Saints has received that illustrate our suggestions.

TIP #1

Even if it might not appear like your previous employment is relevant to the position you want, you can always locate examples of the abilities that set you apart from the competition.

EXAMPLE

You are applying for a job at a marketing firm after working as a cashier at a store. Daily interactions with consumers have given you knowledge and customer service abilities that will come in handy when dealing with clients at an agency.

FEEDBACK

We appreciate that the author used a narrative style while discussing their professional experience.

TIP #2

Numerical data on your resume is a good thing, but utilize it carefully. There must be context since it should enrich your story in a meaningful way.

EXAMPLE

At your last work, you oversaw social media engagement and increased the number of followers by 200%. This figure doesn't tell the whole story by itself (what if you increased your following from five to fifteen?). If you started with 1,000 followers and raised to 3,000, this context makes the stats much more spectacular.

FEEDBACK

The applicant's ability to create and meet ambitious goals is demonstrated in their resume.

TIP #3

Don’t be afraid to color outside the lines. There are many ways to format a resume, so don’t worry about following a template.

EXAMPLE

There’s no correct way to write a resume. Of course, you need the basics (your name, your work experience, etc.) but the way you choose to present this information is up to you. If you’re interested in graphic design, incorporate colors and design elements. If you are passionate about something, include it in a section about your interests. This will make you stand out and give a genuine portrayal of who you are.

FEEDBACK

This updated resume draws the viewer’s eye and better showcases the personality of the applicant.
